Week 8 review - Poverty Bay earn top Lochore Cup billing

NZPA - 06/10/2007

Poverty Bay charged home to beat West Coast 36-21 in their Lochore Cup match in Greymouth.

They overturned a 5-21 halftime deficit with a fine allround performance after the interval.

The result left them as top qualifiers for next weekend's semifinals, which West Coast will also contest despite today's result.

Poverty Bay began in menacing fashion when second five-eighth Ian Logan scored a try in the opening minute.

But West Coast responded with two tries to little winger Maleli Tora while first five-eighth Corey Simpson brought his kicking boots along.

Simpson contributed three penalties, among them one huge wind-assisted effort from 63m.

The complexion of the match changed completely in the second half as Poverty Bay gave West Coast a lesson in running rugby, making good use of gaping holes exposed by the home side's rush defence.

Poverty Bay 36 (Kahu Tamatea 2, Ian Logan, Malakai Ravulo, Sione Ngatu tries; Scott Leighton pen, 4 con) West Coast 21 (Maleli Tora 2 tries; Corey Simpson 3 pen, con). Halftime: 5-21.
