Week 7 review - Poverty Bay survive Thames Valley onslaught

NZPA - 01/10/2007

Poverty Bay survived a Thames Valley onslaught in the last 10 minutes of their Lohore Cup match to come away 26-23 winners in Gisborne on Saturday.

Poverty Bay raced to a 17-point lead after seven minutes scoring two fine tries through winger Hone Kar and prop Josh Maynard with first five-eighth Scott Leighton slotting a conversion and a penalty as well.

Thames Valley opened their account after 10 minutes with a penalty through fullback David Harrison but Poverty Bay were 20-3 ahead through another penalty after just 15 minutes into the game.

Thames Valley showed massive composure to battle back to notch two good tries through David Dillon and Steve Hill. Harrison added the conversions and a penalty for the teams to go into the break 20-20.

There was little between the sides in the second half but it was Poverty Bay who managed to gain good position and slot two vital penalties to Thames Valley's one.

Thames Valley, led by openside flanker Filo Tuuga and No 8 Dillon threw everything into the final 10 minutes but Poverty Bay hung on grimly for the win.

Scores:

Poverty Bay 26 (Hone Kar, Josh Maynard tries; Scott Leighton 4 pen 2 con) Thames Valley 23 (David Dillon, Steve Hill tries; David Harrison 3 pen 2 con). Halftime 20-20.
