Week 6 review - lock turns star winger

NZPA - 24/09/2007

Star Tuliakiono switched from lock to wing without missing a beat to help South Canterbury kick off the Lochore Cup with a win on Saturday.

He scored one of the four South Canterbury tries in their 28-22 win over Thames Valley in Paeroa.

Thames Valley came from behind to lead 10-7 at one stage when they had an upper hand in the first half despite going on to trail 10-14 at the break.

But South Canterbury took firm control of the game in the second half and showed that the pool which included most South Island teams was stronger than the one with only North Island teams in the first stage of the competition.

South Canterbury had scored only one win in that first stage while Thames Valley managed two before the competition was split into Meads and Lochore Cups for this weekend.

Tuliakiono was switched from lock to wing in late changes to the South Canterbury side but he made the most of it in extra space and helped his team win a bonus point for a minimum of four tries.

Result

South Canterbury 28 (Seto Sauiro, Roydon Palmer, Star Tuliakiono, Matt Fetu tries; Mark Tutton 4 con), Thames Valley 22 (Blair Rawlins, Steven Hill, Nick Holmes tries; David Harrison pen, 2 con). Halftime: 14-10.
