Week 6 review - late try seals win for Mid Canterbury

NZPA - 24/09/2007

A last minute try to Zane Hiko saw Mid Canterbury beat Wanganui 21-19 in their Meads Cup match in Ashburton on Saturday.

Trailing 14-19 with 10 minutes remaining countless opportunities went begging for Mid Canterbury, who looked as though they were never going to cross the tryline.

But in the dying seconds Hiko spotted a gap around the ruck and crossed over to level the scores before first five-eighth Davey Maw calmly slotted the conversion from a handy angle.

Mid Canterbury had led 8-7 at halftime after playing into a strong wind.

Wanganui came out firing in the second half and put Mid Canterbury on the back foot.

Both sides showed their liking for free running rugby but countless errors and infringements slowed the game down.

Fraser Hutchinson at No 8 was the pick of Mid Canterbury's forwards, proving a strong with the ball in hand and on defence.

Midfield backs Jack Umaga and Manase Nonu were lively while for Wanganui first five-eighth Leon Mason and centre Logan Vaughan ran with purpose.

Mid Canterbury 21 (Lloyd Carter, Zane Hiko tries; Davey Maw 3 pen, con) Wanganui 19 (Logan Vaughan, Johnny Mow, Row Katonivere tries; Daniel Hooper 2 con). Halftime: 8-7.
