2009 Heartland Championship Season Overview

Only two matches remain to determine the fourth Heartland Championship winners in the Meads and Lochore Cups. Allblacks.com takes a look at the season so far, recapping all the matches and happenings over the last nine weeks.

Forgotten how it all works?

Round One

At the commencement of the competition, the 12 teams are split into seeded pools of six teams - Pool A and Pool B (seedings are based on the positions from the previous year of competition). During the first round, each team plays the other team in the pool once.

All teams advance to Round Two, with the top three teams in each pool advancing to the Meads Cup pool, while the bottom three teams go through to the Lochore Cup pool.

Round Two

Each team in both the respective Cup pools play the three teams they did not play from the first round. The teams (top three) with the most competition points from the first round receives two home fixtures, while the bottom three have to play two away fixtures.

All competition points from the first round carry through to round two, and the combined points carry through to determine the semi finalists. The top four teams in the Meads and Lochore Cup competitions at the end of this second round advance to the semi finals, or Round Three.

Round Three

The Meads and Lochore Cup winners are both determined in four-team single-elimination matches. The highest surviving seeds host the matches.
