West Coast squeaked home to claim an 18-17 win over previous competition leaders North Otago in Greymouth with Sean McClure's goal-kicking boot negating the three tries to two advantage North Otago enjoyed.

But bonus points kept North Otago in a share of first place while South Canterbury, courtesy of their 38-27 home win over Buller also joined the front runners.

Thames Valley gave their Meads Cup playoff hopes a boost when beating Wairarapa Bush, who went into the game ahead three points ahead of them, 29-23 and ended in fourth place while two sides are one point further back, Buller and Wairarapa Bush.

Poverty Bay fullback Andrew Tauatevalu enjoyed a big day of points scoring with three tries and five conversions for 25 points in his side's 52-38 home win over Mid Canterbury.
